A series of celebration activities are taken place worldwide in celebrating the International Nurses Day which is on 12 May every year to praise the founder of nursing, Florence Nightingale, of her noble contributions in the field. Kiang Wu Nursing College of Macau organized "Cap Conferment and Pinning Ceremony" on 6 May to celebrate this day as well as to pass along the selfless contribution spirits of Nightingale among teachers and students and to deepen the students' recognition of their professional identity.
Board Member of the College Chan Kam Meng, Legislator Wong Kit Cheng, Nurse Director of University Hospital Li Yulian, Director of Macau Nursing Staff Association Lou Sio Keng, Assistant Director of Kiang Wu Hospital Fok Wai Lan, Head Nurse of Kiang Wu Hospital Ng Sio Kun, Fong Kam Hei, Head Nurse of Conde de São Januário Central Hospital Lam Fong Ieng, Nurse of Kiang Wu Hospital Ng Hou Tek, KWNC President Van Iat Kio and Vice-President Xing Zhihong were present in the Ceremony.
The Ceremony began with the Theme Talk "Be Companions on the Nursing Journey" by University Hospital Nurse Director Li Yulian, who shared her sweet and bitter memories and experiences as a nurse. In her speech she reminded nursing students to maintain and treasure the good relationships with their families and peers. She also emphasized that nursing requires teamwork and she hoped that the seniors can selflessly share their experiences with the younger nurses so as to pass on the commitments and spirits of nursing.
Year 3 and 4 students received the blessing, encouragement and responsibilities from their seniors on the "Cap Conferment and Pinning Ceremony". Meanwhile, Vice-President Xing Zhihong wished that students can always bear in mind the College's caring and contributive spirits so as to continue to contribute to the community with their professionalism. Student representatives Tong Weng Sam and Chan Si Ieng gave a speech to thank teachers' tireless teaching with which they are enabled to build up a solid nursing foundation and be confident of providing quality nursing services for the community in the future. They also expressed that they are proud to be nursing students in this College. At the end of the ceremony, students presented bouquets to all guests and teachers to show gratitude and blessing.
The theme for the International Nurses Day as set by the International Council of Nurses for this year is "Nurses: A Force for Change: Improving Health Systems' Resilience". ICN encourages nurses to actively build up a strong and adaptable local, regional or even global health system, through which their roles could be promoted and further understood by the government and relevant policy makers. KWNC will also continue to reform curriculum and pedagogy according to global trends, changes of the era and environment in accordance with local needs and experts' advice so as to equip its students with adequate competence to take up the sacred mission in maintaining and promoting health of the people.
