When talking about strategies to tackle the ageing society, nurturing nursing talents for the older adults becomes key. Therefore, to strengthen the training for frontline personnel of elderly care institutions, Kiang Wu Nursing College of Macau (KWNC), Hong Kong Alzheimer's Disease Association (HKADA) and Macau Alzheimer's Disease Association (MADA) join together to open the "Certified Dementia Care Planner (CDCP) Course". Supported by the Macao SAR Social Welfare Bureau, the course will take place on Saturdays from 25 March at the Mong Ha Campus of KWNC.
The "Certified Dementia Care Planner (CDCP) Course" is specially designed for professionals whose jobs are related to caring for dementia persons. Target participants are mainly doctors, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists as well as other health care professionals in elderly care institutions. The course duration is 80 hours, during which the essentials of understanding dementia, pre-diagnostic social cognitive assessment and caregiver needs appraisal, care planning and management, advance care management, practicum, case study and exit examination will be covered.
Since 2011, KWNC has been implementing a programme named "Benevolence Lights up my Later Life", which provides general and professional gerontological education to the general public, caregivers, medical personnel as well as professionals from the social welfare sector. A number of interdisciplinary and interprofessional collaborations have also taken place, where extensive international exchanges and cooperation have been built. With its contributions for more than 5 years, the programme has successfully built up its reputation and Macao is now the 27th region in the world with dementia policy implementation, and the dementia prevention work is now one of the main focuses in the five-year development plan of the Macao SAR.
