  • Chair of the Medical Error Identification Committee Mr. O Heng Wa, keynote speaker of the seminar

  • More than a hundred participants including KWNC teachers and students and colleagues from the nursing profession are present

Kiang Wu Nursing College of Macau (KWNC) organized an introductory seminar on Legal Regime of Medical Error and Health Professional's Registration System, which attracted more than a hundred participants including KWNC teachers and students as well as colleagues from the nursing profession.

The Chair of the Medical Error Identification Committee Mr. O Heng Wa Alias Kuah Keng Hua was invited to be the keynote speaker of the seminar. Chair O first introduced to participants the major components of medical practice and error. Medical practice consists of the intention to provide service with legal qualifications, whereas medical error refers to the act or omission in the medical practice that is illegal, faulty and detrimental to the fact, as well as when causal factors are present between the practice and incident.

Chair O then introduced information about medical technology identification standards with case analyses so as to facilitate further discussions on medical error prevention and medical dispute resolution, and some recommendations were offered by Chair O, including taking part in continuing studies to elevate medical personnel's professionality, undergoing more detailed and accurate diagnosis and treatment, avoiding ignorant criticism on colleagues' medical practice, respecting patient's inform consent and rejecting the use of patient's self-prepared medication. Subsequently, Chair O also reminded that when medical dispute arises, the medical personnel concerned can request colleagues or relevant medical institution to get involved in the mediation process so as to avoid the situation from worsening due to the opposition stances.

The Legal Regime of Medical Error and Health Professional's Registration System are closely related to all medical service providers. KWNC hopes that through this seminar, participants especially its nursing students could be more aware of their liability and hence strive to avoid any medical error. It is also hoped that when nursing students are ready to join the workforce they are equipped with the ability and mindset in building up a positive and sound relationship with the clients.
