2017 “Benevolence Lights up my Later Life” Programme of KWNC Continues to Strive for Promotion in Dementia Prevention and Care

To draw the attention and encourage different populations in the society to contribute to the ageing issue in Macao as well as to actively tackle relevant challenges that derive from such phenomenon, Kiang Wu Nursing College of Macau (KWNC), The Women's General Association of Macau and Macau Alzheimer's Disease Association (MADA) joined forces to establish the “Benevolence Lights up my Later Life Programme 2017 – Dementia Prevention and Care for Older Adults”. Greatly supported by the Social Welfare Bureau, this programme will start from March to May this year, through which series of lectures and training workshops will be launched for the general public and more specifically for in-home caregivers. In addition, online learning and resource sharing platform with prize quizzes are also available as encouragements for all people to be engaged.

"Benevolence Lights up my Later Life Programme 2017 – Dementia Prevention and Care for Older Adults" will launch 6 public lectures and 4 specialized training workshops for caregivers of older adults. The themes will include: "The forgotten time", "Recognize dementia at an early stage: distinction between normal ageing and dementia", "When parents, family members or friends suffer from dementia", "Effective prevention measures for dementia: guides on daily diet and activities", "Keeping our brain functioning slows down ageing: brain refreshing and wisdom strengthening activity" and "Prevention of cognitive impairment and dementia begins with the fine-tuning of daily habits". In terms of training workshops, themes will include: "Home life care for older persons with dementia", "Strategy for activating cerebrum: dementia exercising tips", "A comprehensive manual of community care for older persons with dementia" and "Practical workshop for dementia care". A total of 10 sessions of the lectures and workshops will be successively taken place in venues of The Women's General Association of Macau. "Benevolence Lights up my Later Life" is a social education programme established by KWNC in tackling the ageing society. Through collaborations across multiple disciplines, professions and sectors, it is hoped that general and professional gerontological education can be delivered to different population including the general public, caregivers, personnel working for older adults, medical and nursing professionals as well as NGO personnel. "Benevolence Lights up my Later Life" Programme has also organized numerous dementia prevention and caregiving lectures and workshops to the general public for different organizations including Macau General Union of the Neighborhood Associations, Macao Federation of Trade Unions, Caritas Macau etc. It is hoped that with the continuous development and extension of this programme, the attention and care for dementia prevention and care in society can be gradually raised.
