Warmly welcomed by President Van Iat Kio, Vice-President Xing Zhihong and Associate Professor Zeng Wen of Kiang Wu Nursing College of Macau (KWNC), the Chief Executive of Alzheimer's Society (UK) Jeremy Hughes visited the Mong Ha Campus on 24 April, 2017 to gain better understanding of the "Benevolence Lights up my Later Life" programme as well as the progress of dementia screening in the community following by a visit to the Nursing & Health Education Research Centre.
During the exchange with KWNC representatives, Jeremy Hughes mentioned that the United Kingdom has listed dementia as its top concerned health issue at the 2012 G8 Summit, meanwhile a campaign named "Dementia Friends" was also initiated. He believed that people with dementia need not only the care of nurses and their families, but also the support of the wider community including banking, public transport, hospital, supermarket and retail industries. Only with the collaborated support from all aspects of the daily life can a dementia-friendly community be cultivated. It is hoped that Macao can soon become a role model for implementing the cultivation of a dementia-friendly community for her neighbouring cities.
