The completion of the ninth session of a series of twelve "Lecture on Chinese Culture"
The ninth session of the "Lecture on Chinese Culture" was held at the Mong Ha Campus of Kiang Wu Nursing College of Macao (KWNC) on 6 April, 2018. Professor Tang Keng Pan of the University of Macau was invited to speak on the Story of the "Son of Macao" Zheng Guanying. Professor Tang walked the participants through Zheng's life story and introduced his famous work "Words of Warning to a Prosperous Age". Through Professor Tang's narration, participates became more acquainted with this prominent writer, thinker and industrialist in modern China and praised for his achievements.
Zheng had a close relationship with Macao not only have his offspring lived in Macao for generations, but also has he completed the "Words of Warning to a Prosperous Age" in the Mandarin's House which is currently listed in the world's cultural heritage. On the other hand, Zheng's work had a far-reaching influence of the rule of governing the country on the Guangxu Emperor and Chinese leaders including Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping. Professor Tang mentioned five achievements made by Zheng namely "saving the country with the Hundred Days' Reform", "saving the country by developing industry", "saving the nation with charity", "saving the country with national education" and "saving the country with popular literature", with an aim to revitalize the economy, enrich the country and save the people, lay greater emphasis on girls' enrolment and propose the establishment of specialized school for professional training through the business activities with western countries.
Professor Tang indicated that in addition to the "Words of Warning to a Prosperous Age", the idea of "Family instructions of Zheng Guanyin" is also worth learning for later generations.
