To respond to the theme of International Nurses Day this year, "Nursing – A voice to lead: Health is a human right-access, investment and economic growth" and celebrate the College's 95th Anniversary, Kiang Wu Nursing College of Macau (KWNC) held the "Theme Talk and Cap Conferment & Pinning Ceremony" at the Auditorium of Kiang Wu Hospital at 10:30 a.m. on 4 May, 2018 to strengthen nursing students' perceptions towards nursing profession and promote the Florence Nightingale's spirit.
60 Year-three students and 57 Year-four students were capped and pinned by KWNC respectively this year. Associate Dean Zhang June of School of Nursing of Sun Yat-sen University, Clinical Nursing Supervisor Wong Ha I of Centro Hospitalar Conde de São Januário, Deputy Head Nurse Hong Lai Peng of Kiang Wu Hospital, and Assistant Professor Ng Wai I were invited to confer the caps on nursing students. Vice-Chair of the Board of Directors of the College António José de Freitas, Executive Officer of Education Department Tsang Sau Mui Alice, Deputy Head Nurse of Kiang Wu Hospital Chui Chi Ian and Advanced Practice Nurse of Kiang Wu Hospital Leong Lap Tong were invited to confer the pins on nursing students. Chair of the Board of Directors Lau Veng Seng, Vice-Chair Vong Kwok Seng, Vice-Chair Ho King Lun, KWNC President Van Iat Kio, Board Members, guests inside and outside the College, and over 300 teachers and students attended the ceremony.
At the ceremony, Year-three and Year-fourth student representatives Leong Kin Fai and Leong Sai Hang extended their gratitude to the clinical placement institutions, College and teachers on behalf of all of the nursing students. Besides, they also stated that they would always remember the pledge, and prepare themselves for the future career path and make contributions to the nursing profession development. Facing the changes in social culture, economy, technological development, and imminent transition into an ageing society, they encouraged the young generation to engage in continuous training to enhance their professional skills and show more concerns about social development and policies of China and the Macao SAR in order to develop their career path with social development.
KWNC President Van Iat Kio expressed her appreciation to students for their concerns about social and personal development. Besides, she also mentioned that the College was making progress towards internationalization with the active promotion on the specialty nursing localization and successful exploration of six local specialty-based clinical placement venues in three hospitals, including cardiology, nephrology, paediatrics, intensive care unit, hospice and palliative care nursing and diabetes, and achieved clinical practice base accreditation, allowing students to learn more about the nursing knowledge of the local healthcare system and public needs. Moreover, the College is currently organizing the "Master of Nursing (MNP) Programme" which is scheduled to be launched at the end of this year.
A cooperation agreement exchange ceremony between KWNC and the Faculty of Law of University of Macau took place during the ceremony. In addition, a renowned local writer and the son of Huang Huanxiao, Gao Demin was invited to be the keynote speaker of the Theme Talk "The Daughter of Macao — Huang Huanxiao".
