The "Objective Structured Clinical Assessment" (OSCA) took place on 13 June 2018. A total of 59 year-three students (BSN2015) of "Bachelor of Science in Nursing" (BSN) Programme of Kiang Wu Nursing College of Macau were involved in the assessment and evaluated by 18 examiners of the College for their clinical competence in terms of comprehensive analytical ability and coping capacity.

The OCSA was conducted in the form of one student facing two examiners for the evaluation of case assessment and nursing operation. The former includes respiratory, circulatory, skeletal, urinary, geriatric, gastrointestinal and nervous system while the latter includes the application of personal protective equipment (PPE) and mucus extracting, central venous pressure monitoring and administration of medication, intramuscular injection, and intravenous injection and wound care. Students were randomly assigned assessment contents for case assessment and nursing operation and required to complete the procedures within a time limit of 35 to 40 minutes.

The OCSA is considered an important assessment since students are required to pass the assessment before entering the whole year clinical practice. Besides, the College also imposes strict requirements for the OSCA. Therefore, the assessment not only represents students' learning outcomes of application of theoretical knowledge and skills, but also College's recognition to their nursing knowledge and skills, ensuring that they are able to cope with different situations during their clinical studies with accurate judgements and analytical skills to guarantee the quality of nursing and safeguard the safety of patient care.
