Kiang Wu Nursing College of Macau (KWNC) has completed the 10th "Cognition Salon". A total of ten sessions of Cognition Salon have attracted professionals from six different specializations to conduct cognitive assessment for fifteen older persons on 29 June 2018.
The "Cognition Salon" has been providing cognitive assessment for older persons in the Centro de Dia Brilho da Vida, Lar de Idosos da Obra das Mães and Centro de Convívio Vivacidade da Associação Geral dos Operários de Macau since last November. This event has earned full support and engagement from professionals of different sectors in the local community, including doctors, nurses, social workers, programme coordinators, health assistants and physical therapists, nursing students, as well as Youth Ambassadors, caregivers and families of older persons with dementia who have participated in the "Benevolence Lights up my Later Life Programme".
Through discussions, case studies, and observation of the practice place for cognitive assessment and healthcare promotion, the professionals have deepened their understanding and competencies towards dementia and assessment process. In addition, they also provided caregivers and families of older persons with dementia with better care guidance, medication advice and discussion opportunities on nursing ethics which were conducive to care quality improvement. The programme coordinator, KWNC Assistant Professor Lei Wai In expressed that this event not only served as an exchange platform for different professionals to discuss the issues on daily dementia care and promote information exchange among various professions, but also provided students and Youth Ambassadors with practice and learning opportunities for a positive impact on effectiveness of teaching and learning enhancement.
The "Cognition Salon" funded by the Social Welfare Bureau has been specifically offered to strengthen the professional competence of the healthcare team in response to the "Dementia Friendly Communities" promoted by the Macao SAR Government.
