Judges for Cantonese debates and participating institutes
Debate Club of KWNCSU give their heartfelt thanks to judges for their guidance
Organised by the Debate Club of Students' Union of the College (KWNCSU), co-organised by Macau Anti-drugs Volunteer Group, and sponsored by Macao Higher Education Fund, the 10th Kiang Wu Cup Macau Debate Competition for Higher Education Institutes was held in Kiang Wu Nursing College of Macau (KWNC) on 9 and 10 March 2019. A total of 12 teams from five higher educational institutes participated in six events. Choi Huan Hou, the winner of Best Debater, said that the events were exciting and thought-provoking.
The Cantonese and Putonghua competitions were held in two days respectively, attracting students from Macau University, Macao Polytechnic University, Macao University of Science and Technology, City University of Macau and KWNC. The two groups addressed separately the topics "Macau should increase the minimum penalty for drug trafficking", "Knowledge should be shared for free", "Macau residents should be allowed to rent out flats as a hostel", "Cannabis should/should not be legalized", "what is youth? Impetuous fire", and "What is more reliable for the elderly: institutionalised care or home care?" for a total of six hours of debate. In the end, Macao University won the Cantonese category whilst the winner of Putonghua debates went to Macao University of Science and Technology. Choi Huan Hou, a Year One student of KWNC was awarded the best debater, who said that debate develops people's various personal abilities – work done before the competitions strengthens one's research ability and faculty of thinking whereas debate itself trains one's abilities in observation, organization of one's expressions as well as reaction, which are all extremely challenging.
The Kiang Wu Cup Debate Competition has been held for ten consecutive years and has since provided debaters with a platform for exchanges among all the higher educational institutes in Macau.
