  • President Van Iat Kio’s Opening Ceremony Speech

Honourable Vice-Chair of the College Council Ung Pui Kun, Nursing Director of Kiang Wu Hospital Wong Cheng Wa, Vice-Chairman of Board of Directors of the Alumni Association of Kiang Wu Nursing College of Macau Wong Sok Chan, distinguished guests, teachers and students, good morning,

After the summer holiday, the new academic year officially begins today, and we gathered here for the Opening Ceremony. First of all, on behalf of all teachers and students of the College, I would like to extend gratitude to every College Council Members, guests, and alumni who spend time with us to start the new academic year although they have hectic schedules. We appreciate all your support.

The blazing weather in the summer holidays could not stop the enthusiasm of teachers and students. Likewise in previous years, this year the College and the Students’ Union organised different exchanges and learning activities, including, Summer Exchange Programme for Teachers and Students, a total of 38 teachers and students from the United States, Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan, Beijing, Shanghai, Changzhou, Chengdu, Zhuhai, Guangzhou, Hong Kong and Kiang Wu Nursing College of Macau (KWNC) participated in this event. This year we continued to organise exchanges in Portugal and also Belgium for clinical exchanges, in which a total of 16 teachers and students attended. Moreover, a total of 19 teachers and students participated in the Greater Bay Area Huizhou-Shenzhen Exchange Group supported by the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macao S.A.R.. At the same time, Glory of Care Sub-club arranged for many groups of students to provide voluntary teaching services in Guangxi. The College hopes that, in line with the development strategy of the Special Administrative Region (SAR) Government's Belt and Road Initiative and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area development strategies, and the promotion of exchanges and collaboration policies with Portuguese-speaking countries, will create more exchange opportunities for teachers and students, broaden their horizons, and promote professional and personal development.

Today, I participate in the opening ceremony with gratitude and happiness. I can see all the teachers and students present here are vigorous and have energetic spirit to start the new academic year. I am extremely glad that every student here chose to devote themselves to the nursing profession and continue education. In this academic year, the College offers a total of five higher education courses, plus the "Nursing Professional Master Degree Graduate Student Programme (NPM)" collaborated with Sun Yat-Sen University. There are a total of 435 students taking the following programmes "Bachelor of Science in Nursing Programme (BSN)", "Bachelor of Science in Nursing (Supplementary) Programme (BSNS)", "Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Nursing Programme (PDAN)", specialist subjects include: Child and Adolescent Health Nursing, Renal Nursing, Diabetes Nursing, Senior Adult Nursing, Intensive Care Nursing and Hospice and Palliative Nursing, "Master of Nursing Programme (MN)", "Certificate Programme in Applied Gerontology (CAG)", and "Nursing Professional Master Degree Graduate Student Programme (NPM)". Now let us welcome all new students to join the College family with warm applause.

Today, there are fresh students who have just entered the BSN Programme. I would like to ask the first-year students, do you know what nursing service is for? Nursing service is provided to "people". Every student present here takes care of human health and looks after patients’ life after graduation. With this sacred and great responsibility, first you need to equip yourself to be able to take care of others' lives. Consequently, the nursing training process must be particularly rigorous. Students will experience satisfaction, joy, frustration, hardships, and difficulties during this period. I hope you can all confront and overcome all obstacles. In the past, it was believed that learning success depended on 20% IQ and 80% EQ. Today, research in the field of teaching has focused on exploring the seven secret weapons of positive psychology, including grit, zest, self-control, optimism, gratitude, social intelligent and curiosity. These shows that the key to successful learning is persistent and focused pursuit of your goal, never forget to remain true to our original aspiration. The main point is personality traits cultivation. In the new academic year, to reinforce support and counselling services for students, a college counsellor was added to KWNC team, the counsellor will be in the College campus every Thursday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., appointment process is simplified the students can directly book an appointment. KWNC also increases the promotion of mental health and psychology education within the campus to raise everyone’s awareness of mental health. I hope that through a series of measures, we will work together with everyone here to overcome all difficulties and complete every learning stage. I also hope that students can take the initiative to communicate and connect with the College, move forward bravely, and make good use of their own time, achieve their dreams, live a more fulfilling, stunning and meaningful life, and become an excellent nurse that the public expects and trusts.

The construction of the new KWNC campus is underway. It is expected to be completed and renovated next year, and we will be relocated in the 2020/2021 academic year. The new campus belongs to everyone. Some students will take the lead in becoming users, and some will come to visit as alumni. The location of the new campus is in Cotai area, which is quite different from the current location in the city centre. The College will consider everyone’s needs and make appropriate arrangements in terms of transportation, meals, and accommodation. Moving to a new campus is a remarkable action. We need the coordination of all teachers and students to complete this crucial task. During this period, the College will keep disseminating information about new campus construction and relocation to students.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Motherland and the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Macao SAR. Earlier, the College requested for photographs for the "The Kiang Wu Nursing College of Macau (KWNC) 100th Anniversary Photography Exhibition". The opening ceremony of this exhibition will be on 6th September. In the ceremony, 50 photos will be selected as outstanding works by The Photographic Society of Macao. I look forward to your excellent photos. To celebrate the double celebration and the upcoming completion of the new campus, the College will hold a celebrative event with all teachers and students on 9th November (Saturday) this year. All teachers and students are requested to reserve time to participate. This academic year, the College will continue to strengthen patriotism education for teachers and students, reinforce the understanding of the Constitution and the Macao Basic Law, and ensure academic integrity.

In response to the implementation of the new "Higher Education Regime", the College successfully completed the revision of the "College Statutes" in early August, marking a new page in the development of the College. Thus, there will be greater development in terms of courses, collaborative education, credit system, and electives. Next year, the implementation of the new Statutes and the relocation of the new campus are our priorities which are closely related to everyone. I hope that all teachers and students will continue to unite, be fully committed, and achieve success in teaching and learning.

Lastly, I would like to thank all the leaders, guests, and KWNC colleagues for their support and help with the work of the College. I wish you all a happy, healthy working and family life! I also wish you all a pleasant learning journey! Thank you everyone!
