8 Clinicians of Macao’s first Quality End of Life Care for All© (QELCA©) programme have successfully completed their studies after the 6-month training and graduated on the 25th June 2021 held at Kiang Wu Nursing College of Macau.
The eight clinicians come from various medical and nursing specialties such as neurology and cardiology from both private and public hospitals, as well as community long-term care settings. All clinicians have shared their 6-month experience of implementing and promoting palliative and end-of-life care in their respective settings, helping terminal patients and their loved ones to go through the most difficult journey in their lives.
Supported by the first hospice in the world, St Christopher’s in London, and the Beijing Living Willing Promotion Association, Kiang Wu Hospital and Kiang Wu Nursing College of Macau have jointly hosted QELCA© since August last year. QELCA© is the first clinically oriented training programme, facilitating healthcare professionals across all fields to learn and adopt the concept of palliative care, and integrate the clinical expertise learned in their professional environment.
According to the programme organisers, Dr. Kuai In TAM, Postdoctoral Researcher of Kiang Wu Nursing College of Macau and Ms. Ka Meng AO, Clinical Nurse of Kiang Wu Hospital Hospice & Palliative Care Center, the introduction of QELCA© aims to raise awareness of palliative and end-of-life care in Macao, emphasising on the importance of end-of-life care so as to enhance terminal patients’ quality of life, and to alleviate pain and suffering for them and their families.
The graduation ceremony was attended by representatives from the Social Welfare Bureau of Macao SAR Government, Macau University of Science and Technology Hospital, Macao Federation of Trade Unions, Ka Ho Nursing Home, General Union of Neighbourhood Associations of Macao, Pou Tai Integrated Service Centre for Senior Citizens, Kiang Wu Hospital and Kiang Wu Nursing College of Macau.
