Zhuhai Human Resources and Social Security Bureau, and Zhuhai Federation of Trade Unions as the organisers, while Kiang Wu Nursing College of Macau (KWNC) and Nurses Association of Zhuhai hosted the ‘Zhuhai-Macao Nursing Vocational Skill Competition’ Finals on the 25th November 2021 at the Zhuhai People’s Hospital. Macao team won the first, the third and fourth places in the competition, while KWNC was awarded the Excellence Organisation Award. Through the competition, the organisers assisted the nurses in the two places to establish an industry standard and promote regional collaborations among nursing talents in the field of long-term care.
The opening ceremony was officiated by Zhuhai Health Bureau Deputy Director Chai Hongliang, Zhuhai Human Resources and Social Security Bureau Fourth-level Researcher Lin Zhiwu, Zhuhai Federation of Trade Unions Economics Department Chief Huang Jiqu, Zhuhai People’s Hospital Vice-President Lu Jiancheng, KWNC Vice-President Xing Zhihong, Kiang Wu Hospital Education Committee Nursing Supervisor Ng Ngai, Zhuhai Vocational Training Guidance Service Centre Director Xie Limeng, Zhuhai People's Hospital Nursing Department Director Ye Qiao. The Panel of judges included five nursing experts from Zhuhai and Macao, including KWNC Assistant Professor Lei Wai In, gave participants uniform scores on the long-term senior care comprehensive nursing skills.
The 15 contestants were all elite caregivers who won the preliminary contest between the two places in end of October. Among them, five contestants were from Macao and 10 contestants were from Zhuhai. They were to provide appropriate care for the patient's condition. In the end, Macao Pou Tai Integrated Service Center for Elderly Pang Ceon Mei (彭春眉), Kiang Wu Hospital Chong Man Ieng and Hospital de Reabilitação Ká-Hó Chen Yuan, won the first, third and fourth places respectively. The judges unanimously agreed that Macao contestants fully embodied humanistic care in the nursing process and could bring warmth to patients in nursing services, they were decent role models.
After the competition, in the three winners’ sharing, they expressed that this was the first time they participated in a nursing vocational skill competition, therefore, they practiced actively since the beginning of the preliminary competition, and they extended gratitude to the teachers for their attentive guidance. The participants not only acquired valuable knowledge and experiences during the competition, yet also established friendship. They mentioned that in the process of post-contest exchanges, contestants from the two places shared the advantages of their nursing skills, which helped to make up for their own shortcomings and improve the service level of senior care in the two places.
Deputy Director Chai Hongliang, Vice-President Lu Jiancheng and Vice-President Xing Zhihong pointed out the importance of this competition in their speeches, as Zhuhai and Macao enter an ageing state, and in the context of the development of the Greater Bay Area and Guangdong-Macao In-depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin, the society’s continuous increase in demand for caregivers, training, service process and quality standards of caregivers in the two places were becoming more and more essential. Therefore, they hoped that through this competition, an industry standard was established, to guide and inspire caregivers in Zhuhai and Macao to improve the skills and comprehensive quality of long-term care services, and jointly promote the healthy development of the nursing service industry.
