Programme Objectives

1.  In accordance with the educational philosophy of “From Personhood to Benevolence”, the Certificate Programme in Applied Gerontology aims at equipping senior service workers with comprehensive knowledge of gerontology, who will then provide high-quality service to older adults and satisfy the needs of an ageing society.

2.  The Programme fosters students’ acute perception in senior policies and capabilities to make relevant recommendations to promote a positive ageing society.

Programme Features

1.  The Certificate Programme in Applied Gerontology, by providing subjects related to education, assessment, execution plan, management and clinical analysis, to satisfy the needs of senior care and professional development.

2.  The Programme is set up for bachelor’s degree holders who work in senior service organisations as social service provider, medical and nursing care provider, occupational therapist, physiotherapist, other health-related positions, and also people who are interested in senior care.

3.  The Programme highlights the comprehensive concept of senior care in different health domains. The teaching attaches emphasis to the study and the clinical study reflection that are based on solving actual problems, in order to foster students’ clinical thinking. In the meantime, the Programme employs evidence-based and diversified health management approaches as the predominant teaching foundation for clinical practice.

4.  Upon completion of the Programme, students would have acquired professional knowledge related to gerontological care. This Programme helps students in developing the ability to solve problems that they encounter in their workplaces and to enhance professional care ability. Students would be able to perform different functions in senior service, including professional care, multi-disciplinary collaboration, leadership, ethical decision-making, health promotion, etc. and eventually fulfil the needs of older adults’ health.

Programme Intended Learning Outcome (PILO)

Upon completion of the Programme, students would have the ability to:

  • Explain the basic concepts of applied gerontology and the main ageing theories.

  • Use comprehensive knowledge of gerontology to conduct a full assessment for older adults.

  • With interdisciplinary knowledge, formulate individual care plans based on the needs of seniors and their families.

  • Ethical issues can be identified during professional implementation.

  • Based on the evidence-based approach, an improvement plan can be formulated to enhance the quality of senior services.

  • Identify popular topics in an ageing society and make recommendations on related policies.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must have attained a bachelor’s degree of health or social work discipline, such as medicine, nursing, social work, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, psychological counselling, etc., or equivalent qualifications recognised by the Academic Committee.

Applicants who have worked in senior service or related sectors for one year or more will be considered with priority.
