Teaching & Learning

Programme Design
1.
The Programme comprises two components: College Core Requirement and the Programme Core Subjects. They include general education subjects, nursing subjects and clinical practicum so as to foster generic, practical and professional skills of the students. The selected teaching and learning strategies include lectures, seminars, tutorials, laboratory work, multimedia and online learning platform, and clinical study. The Programme endeavors to facilitate the integration of theoretical knowledge and clinical practice.
2.
This programme adopts credit system to calculate the learning hour of each subject. One credit is equivalent to fifteen learning hours; each learning hour refers to one clock hour of lecture/seminar/tutorial, or one and a half clock hours of laboratory work, or two and a half clock hours of Clinical Study on average.

Clinical Study
1.  In Clinical Study, students are given opportunities to apply theory to clinical practice, to perform “person-centred” holistic care, and to develop their clinical nursing skills, core competencies, evidence-based attitudes and the abilities in clinical reasoning, judgment and decision making under different circumstances. Such arrangement in Clinical Study on basis of the combination of theory and practice can make learning even more effective; meanwhile the variable and real clinical setting will also facilitate the formation of students’ professional thinking pattern and establishment of their professional attitude.
2.  A progressive learning mode is adopted in Clinical Study, the content increase along with the progress of the programme. Clinical Study hours ranges from 2 weeks in year 1 to 4 weeks each semester in year 2; clinical placement increases from 4 weeks to 6 weeks in year 3; and successive placement of 25 weeks is needed in the whole year 4. The content of Clinical Study develops from simple procedural skills to complex clinical reasoning, judgment and decision making. There are different organizations, different groups of people to encounter for Clinical Study, in order to lay a good foundation for students getting into a nurse’s professional role. (Table 3)
3. In order to ensure that students are able to provide safe and accurate nursing procedures for nursing clients, nursing skill assessment or Objective Structured Clinical Assessment (OSCA) is arranged before each phase of clinical study. In addition, students are required to pass the OSCA before entering Clinical Study V.
