Kiang Wu Nursing College of Macau (KWNC) successfully organized the “American Heart Association (AHA) - Basic Life Support (BLS) Instructor Course”, which is led by the Hong Kong Resuscitation Society (HKRS). Funded by Higher Education Fund, the training started in last December and a total of 5 lecturers from KWNC have completed the course in February to become AHA-BLS instructors, including Samantha Chao, Michelle Hungm, Mina Lam, Jun Wong and Kyle Wong. This means that KWNC is now qualified to teach the “AHA BLS Provider Course” and become one of the training bases in Macau .

Kyle Wong, who is also the coordinator of the training course, recalled that the biggest challenge was teaching assessment, in which students were required to teach first aid knowledge and skills within a certain time limit in order to achieve the course objectives. He said that it was truly testing their understanding of teaching methodology, time management and teamwork.

Wong also said that the College has been teaching first aid skills to nursing students since its inception, and first aid is a core skill that every nurse needs to master. The College has a self-organized First aid team, which is always active in the community to provide on-site first aid service, and also cooperates with organizations, such as the Fire Services Bureau, government departments, higher education institutions, primary and secondary schools, to provide first aid teaching.

From the College’s perspectives, one of the biggest reasons for promoting the acquisition of First Aid License in Macao was to raise the social rescue awareness, the College has set up a project named “Be a Nurse, Be a Life Provider” in 2016, aiming to train student nurses with basic first aid skills and spread the concept of “Save others and save yourself” to the community. It was first began by the College’s teachers obtaining the European Resuscitation Council (ERC) instructor qualification, and then teachers would be able to provide the ERC BLS Provider Course to nursing students, hence the name of "Pro" for all nurses.
