Professional Competence Development Centre

According to the education development requirements of the College, there are laboratories in the Professional Competence Development Centre on the fourth, fifth and sixth floors of the campus, including 11 fundamental and specialised nursing laboratories, one Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) Centre and one General laboratory.

1. Nursing Laboratories
Nursing Laboratories include Simulated Childbearing and Paediatric Ward, Fundamental Nursing, Adult Nursing, Geriatric Laboratories, Simulated Intensive Care Unit, Simulated Isolation Ward, High-Fidelity Simulation Nursing Laboratory, Virtual Reality Nursing Laboratory (under preparation).

•  Laboratories and Demonstration Rooms/Laboratories (Fundamental Nursing, Adult Nursing, and Geriatric Laboratories) are mainly used for teaching fundamental nursing and professional subjects and skills practise, to simulate the environment setting of a hospital ward, with a total of 31 beds and there is the capacity of accommodating 155 people attending a classes and practise at the same time.
•  Simulated Childbearing and Paediatric Ward:This Ward is divided into two sections, childbearing section and the paediatric section. The childbearing section mainly facilitates teaching and learning regarding pregnant women assessment, newborn baby assessment, and newborn baby bathing. The paediatric section enables teaching and learning about children’s assessment and nursing. The interior is set up to simulate the environment of a hospital ward, with three hospital beds, one delivery bed, six newborn baths, and two children’s beds. It can accommodate 50 people to attend a class and practise at the same time. The laboratory is also equipped with Super Tory® and SimJunior® high-fidelity simulated newborn babies and children, allowing students to learn and practice specialised nursing with a real-life environment and interact with high-fidelity simulation models in preset scenarios.
•  Simulated Intensive Care Unit:This unit is mainly used for intensive care teaching and skill practise, to simulate the environment setting of a single intensive care ward, with one bed, equipped with monitoring devises and nursing equipment. Also, the room is equipped with one way glass. It can accommodate 10-15 people to study on site in a group, and other students can study simultaneously in the form of observation through a one way glass.
•  Simulated Isolation Ward:This Ward is mainly used for teaching and skill practise regarding isolation, infectious disease protection knowledge. With a setting of a simulated isolation ward environment, there are clean area, ward area and buffer area. Students can learn how to put on individual protective equipment correctly in the clean area, learn various infectious diseases nursing in the ward area, and learn to take off their protective equipment correctly in the buffer area. The laboratory can accommodate 30 people to attend a class and practise at the same time.
•  High-Fidelity Simulation Nursing Laboratory:This laboratory is mainly used for the teaching and practise of nursing cases in various subjects, to simulate the hospital setting of a ward with two beds and equipped with a one-way glass. It is also equipped with SimMan® 3G high-fidelity model, allowing students to learn and practice specialised nursing with a real-life environment and interact with high-fidelity simulation models in preset scenarios. It can accommodate a group of six to eight people to study on site, and other students can study in the form of observation through a one-way glass.
•  Virtual Reality Nursing Laboratory (Under Preparation):The College has the conception to let students interact with a virtual background (projection or video glasses), therefore students can learn/practice clinical skills of specialised nursing in different ways, including thinking training, coping skills, communication skills, evaluation skills, judgment skills and nursing care skills, etc.

2. Objective Structured Clinical Examination(OSCE) Centre
There are 14 wards with single beds in OSCE Centre, which can be utilised for different types of multi-station skill exams, such as health care and diagnosis and treatment. The number of stations (up to 14 stations) is determined by the preset assessment objectives, and skill tests for different projects are conducted in a sequential order and in time periods. The examination content includes collecting data from the patient (taking patients’ medical history verbally: the patient’s medical history and chief complaint), to conduct further assessment in response to the content of the consultation (physical assessment: to use the techniques of inspection, diagnosis, percussion, and auscultation to assess the condition of the case), and to determine the patient’s care plan based on the assessment results, then giving the patient care measures, etc. according to the plan. In addition, the centre can be used as a venue for classes and practise.

3. General Laboratory
The General Laboratory is a multi-functional laboratory. It is also an experimental place for various fundamental subjects, including: anatomy, physiology, microbiology, pharmacology and pathophysiology. The computer experiment system used in the laboratory can strengthen students’ thinking and analysis ability during experiments and provide a foundation for future experimental research. In addition, the laboratory is equipped with models of various human body structures and a virtual anatomy learning system to enable students to learn more visually and specifically to enhance the learning outcomes.

Teaching Equipment
•  High-Fidelity Simulation Teaching Equipments
High-fidelity simulation models such as SimMan® 3G, SimJunior® and Super Tory®. Their functions are as follows:
– Setting abnormal cardiopulmonary programme
– Setting programme for different medications
– Airway management (post-intubation care, airway patency, oxygen supply via the oxygen mask, etc.)
– Cardiac examination (2500 types of Electrocardiography (ECG), automatic manual defibrillation, etc.)
– Pulse fluctuations (carotid artery, foot artery, arm artery) and blood pressure fluctuations
– Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
•  Simulated monitor system iSimulate REALITi, its functions are as follows:
– Simulate real-life defibrillators and monitors
– Access to hundreds of cardiac waveforms
– Create different medical case scenarios and transfer inspection reports
– Monitor student participation
•  Virtual injection software Virtual IV®, and its functions are as follows:
– Provide high-quality venipuncture training and skills support
– 3D anatomical graphics for providing visual realism
– Provide a risk-free environment for effective simulation training
– Provides realistic scenarios for training with realistic patient anatomy
•  Virtual Nursing Software vSim® for nursing, its functions are as follows:
– Online interactive virtual environment with complete course resources, pre- and post-simulation tests
– Guided reflection questions that students can practise anytime, anywhere in a safe, authentic environment
– Provide students with different cases of different subjects
– Simulate real nursing situations to cultivate students’ decision-making skills, competence, and confidence
•  Biological function experiment system:
This system is where biological signal collection, amplification, display, recording and processing system configured on a microcomputer. Its biological signal display and processing software utilise the enlarged graphic display and data processing functions of the microcomputer, which can simultaneously display the waveforms of biological signals or tension, pressure and other biological non-electrical signals detected in living organisms or isolated organs. It can also analyse experimental data, save, analyse and print data.
