Lecture on Chinese Culture – Macao and Xinhai Revolution |
Speaker |
Mr. Wei Chuxiong, Advisor of the Centre for Chinese History and Culture of University of Macau |
Moderator |
Ms. U Wai Ang, Assistant Professor of KWNC |
Date |
13 October 2017 |
Overview |
Mr. Wei Chuxiong introduced the relation between Macao and Xinhai Revolution to students by elaborating on 4 different parts – "Macao and Mr. Sun Yat-sen", "Xinhai Revolution and Macao", "Mr. Sun Yat-sen and Macao after Xinhai Revolution", "Historical environment and role of Macao". According to Mr. Wei Chuxiong, since the population and geographical size of Macao are small, plus the fact that it had been ruled by Portuguese for a long period of time, Macao's contribution to China and the close relationship between China and Macao had been overlooked in the history. He opined that "Xinhai Revolution and Macao" was only an epitome of the relationship between Macao and the country, and that the historical footprint of Macao should be studied by understanding the Chinese history and international history from a macroscopic view. He also expressed that Macao people should feel proud of the fact that Macao had made great contribution to the country in Chinese history. |

Lecture on Chinese Culture – The World as One Community and Global Citizenship |
Speaker |
Ms. Lau Sin Peng , Macau renowned senior educator |
Moderator |
Dr. Hu Xiao Xia, Associate Professor of KWNC |
Date |
29 September 2017 |
Overview |
Ms. Lau Sin Peng quoted the Confucius philosophy "The World as One Community" in the Chapter "The Operation of Etiquette" in Book of Rites (Li Ji) to introduce the importance of world peace and global citizenship, as well as the issue of "spectrum of human nature". Ms. Lau opined that people should devote love to not only their country, but also to the world and should shoulder up moral obligation to protect world peace. Such mission should not be taken by people alone, different countries must also reinforce the friendly collaboration with each other and unify themselves. Now, the "Belt Road Initiative" and its advocacy of "community of common destiny for all mankind" are indeed bringing the noble thought backdated to over 2,000 years ago into concrete action. Ms. Lau Sin Peng elaborated on the historical facts of Nanjing Massacre and the help to China provided by global citizen. She mentioned that some of the foreigners selflessly saved Chinese people and strongly condemned the savage invasion of Japanese military. These foreigners even documented the historical facts with books and documentaries, and spread them out all over the world to raise international attention. Regardless of nationality, ethnicity, religion, these people and all global citizens around the world are bearing the spirit of justice and moral obligation to protect world peace. Ms. Lau Sin Peng expressed her hope that the new generation could be global citizens and create a colourful path of life. |

Developmental Pediatrics and Services of Children Assessment Centre in Macao |
Speaker |
Dr. Lee Pui I, Chair of the WHO Regional Committee for the Eradication of Poliomyelitis and Chief Doctor of Pediatrics and Neonatology Department of Conde de São Januário Hospital |
Date |
7 October 2016 |
Overview |
Dr. Lee first introduced the pediatrics and neonatology services of Conde de São Januário Hospital, current status of Developmental Pediatrics, child development milestone as well as the establishment and functions of the Children Assessment Centre. She expressed that there are many misunderstanding among the public in terms of children's growth and development. For instance, parents might think that their children are having developmental delay when they are not growing or learning as fast as other children of the same age are. However, growth is not equal to development, and an accurate child development status can only be monitored through child development milestone or functional assessment. Child development milestone defines a series of functional skills; each skill indicates a normal development pattern according to age, though huge variance within the pattern may exist. Dr. Lee emphasized that the development speed of each child varies and any possible slow development can be temporary and cannot be diagnosed as developmental delay. She also expressed that the outpatient services of Children's Mental Development Clinic include follow-up of common developmental barriers such as language development disorders, congenital anomalies, sensory disturbances, autism and learning disabilities. |

Dr. Lee Kumsun, College of Nursing Art and Science of University of Hyogo |
Date |
6 September 2016 |
Overview |
Dr. Lee Kumsun explained that, Japan is currently implementing an integrated health care system, in which the hospital-based nursing has extended to the community. The setting has also become more patient-oriented. With the inter-professional cooperation between doctors, pharmacists, home nurses and therapists, specific health care, daily life support and care services, especially the home-visit nursing care subsidized by long-term care insurance system are provided to ensure proper care for people in need. Nurses play a key role in home-visit nursing care service. Dr. Lee expressed that there are 400,000 people receiving this service throughout Japan today. It is expected that the number of users will increase to 1,000,000 by year 2020. This shows that the demand for nurses in the community and long-term care in tackling the ageing society is increasing dramatically. In addition, the Japanese government is also contributing in nursing education to encourage young nurses to reach the community. A number of home-visit care training is organized, and the remuneration system has been improved accordingly in order to attract more new blood and talent to the field. |
